PhD Opportunity – Clinical Viral Metagenomics

Are you a motivated Master’s student in Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, or both, interested in infectious diseases, genomics, and pandemic preparedness?

The research group of Dr. Jutte de Vries (Leiden University Center for Infectious Diseases, LUCID) is looking for an ambitious and driven candidate to jointly develop and apply for a PhD project in Clinical Viral Metagenomics. Multidisciplinary projects are the scope of the proposed research.

Our research focuses on metagenomic sequencing to improve virus detection and characterization directly from clinical samples, including viral genomics, intra-host evolution, virus–host interactions, and virus discovery. The goal is to advance pathogen identification for clinical care and strengthen public health surveillance.

We are particularly interested in candidates with demonstrated academic excellence and strong motivation for interdisciplinary research.

Eligibility: candidates must be within 6 months before or after completion of their Master’s degree at the time of the grant application.
