ONDERZOEK

Achtergrond:

With the increase in the older population, shortage of healthcare personnel, increased demands on geriatric healthcare, and loneliness among elderly patients, the implementation of robots may provide part of the solution in the upcoming challenges in healthcare. There are different types of robots implemented in elderly care: physical assistive, that support patients in daily tasks, and social robots. Social robots are robots that provide a social service and support users by developing dyadic ties to people.

In this project, we want to develop an emotion-intelligent robot for long-term care, especially for people with impaired cognition (i.e. persons with advanced dementia and persons with a severe intellectual disability).

To prepare for the next protype of the robot, a literature study needs to be conducted (contextual exploration). Depending on the research question(s), you will write a scoping, rapid, or systematic review on the topic of social robots in long-term care.

Doelstelling:
Our partners have made a list with topics they are interesting in to facilitate the development of the robot. You can either pick one or two questions from that list or come up with your own research question(s).

The only requirement is that the review should be about (social) robots, emotion recognition or stress detection using smart sensors, and long-term care. This gives you direction, while also leaving plenty of room for your own particular interests.

Methode:

Literature study; rapid, scoping or systematic review. The screening and data extraction will be done by two researchers independently. This means that you will be working together with the PI and PhD-candidate on the project.

 STAGE

  • Write protocol for review
  • Conduct a literature search
  • Screening and data extraction for review
  • Write review
  • Participate in team meetings
  • Other (administrative) tasks
  • Present thesis results at a consortium meeting

Periode: Students can start between February – December 2025.

Omschrijving kandidaat: You will be part of the team, so we expect you to be proactive, motivated and a team player. You also need to be able to work independently. Excellent analytical skills and scientific writing are great assets for this project. It is a bonus if you are motivated to go for a peer-reviewed publication based on your thesis.
